When the Final Whistle Blows: Reflecting on Football, Trauma and Domestic Abuse

For many people, football is about community, excitement and shared experiences. Major tournaments like the World Cup bring families and friends together, creating memories that last a lifetime.

Sadly, for others, these occasions can be a time of fear.

Research has highlighted that reports of domestic abuse can increase around major football matches, particularly when England play. It is important to remember that football does not cause domestic abuse. Abuse is always the responsibility of the person choosing to use violence or controlling behaviour. However, heightened emotions, alcohol consumption and existing abusive dynamics can contribute to an increased risk during these periods.

As the World Cup comes to an end, it offers an opportunity to pause and reflect.

For trauma-informed practitioners, understanding the wider context of trauma is essential. Survivors often carry experiences that extend far beyond individual incidents. Living with fear, coercion and emotional or physical abuse can have a profound and lasting impact on mental health, relationships and a person's sense of safety.

Working with trauma means recognising these experiences with empathy, without judgement, and understanding how they may present in the counselling room.

At L&M Trauma Informed Counselling Training, our CPCAB Level 5 Diploma in Working with Trauma equips qualified counsellors with the knowledge and confidence to work ethically and effectively with clients affected by trauma, including domestic abuse. Through a trauma-informed approach, students develop a deeper understanding of the complexities of trauma and how to support recovery safely.

As this tournament concludes, let's celebrate the positives that sport can bring while remaining aware of those who may still be living behind closed doors with fear.

Because every survivor deserves to be heard, believed and supported.

If you're a qualified counsellor looking to develop specialist trauma knowledge, we'd love to welcome you to our CPCAB Level 5 Diploma in Working with Trauma.
